Project Description

Firehouse No. 4 is a 1908 two bay facility aesthetically based on a Renaissance Revival Interpretation of an Italian palazzo.

In need of code upgrades including a fully enclosed fire stair and enhanced fire separationbetween the first story equipment baysand the second story living quarters, thebuilding is being upgraded, in part, with Federalfunds, necessitating consideration of theimpact of work on the historic fabric of thestructure. All exterior work required prior approval by the State Historic Preservation Office, the Connecticut Commission on Culture and Tourism. Exterior work included reroofing and replacement of dormer oeil-de-boeuf windows, rebuilding in-kind prominent the sheet metal cornice, and the addition of the fire stair. The exterio of the stair was carefully considered in the context of the overall building with its brick base rusticated similar to the original building’s rustication. The height of the stair was kept below that of the original cornice and the stair’s setback from the main façade was, in part, chosen to assure that the addition would recede in relation to the original structure.
