Project Description

Luchs / DeCarlo & Doll has renovated the former U.S. Post Office in Meriden. Through the conversion of this 1908 National Register listed building for its own offices, the company is demonstrating its commitment to the preservation and reuse of historic structures, a field which has become a major portion of its professional practice.

DeCarlo & Doll designed the interior revitalizing an old building into vibrant and functional office space.

The a major portion of the former post office customer area has been repurposed as a reception area. Refinished natural oak wainscoting and door and window casings provide the continuity between the original and current uses for this space. Deep coffered and highly ornamented plaster ceilings and well as original marble bordered terrazzo floors are features of this and other spaces. Transoms were retained and additional units added to provide borrowed light for a new conference room and to maintain a sense of openness within the office.

A series of three similarly finished coffered bays form the north range of office spaces. Originally the location of individual post office boxes, this area has been configured to provide a conference room and two private offices.
